Feliz Cinco de Mayo! & Happy Free Comic Book Day!

I just looked at my archives for May for the past few years. Who was that girl writing in 2002? I seriously don't remember a thing that she wrote about. *puzzled*

What happened to my posts on the Ooi wedding in 2004? Did it get deleted???? I can't think about it too much, else I'm gonna get depressed.

By the way, they got married May 9, 2004. Keemin & Lisa got married May 5, 2005. I SMSed Peiee TODAY, wishing her happy anniversary. God, I'm so embarrased.

Anyhoo...
Happy 2nd Anniversary to the Lims!!
Happy (early) 3rd Anniversary to the Oois!!!

What sparked this off was receiving my new AlumNUS DBS card, since the old one was already 4 years old and expired. I vividly remember receiving the old card the day before the Ooi wedding weekend and the hotel bill was my very first charge to the card.

I also bought a new wallet for the Ooi wedding. I wanted a (temporary) super slim one to carry the barest-of-bare essentials cos my fancy wedding handbag was really tiny. And you know what? I'm still using that wallet today. 3 years already. Not bad for a $3 COMODITeE wallet from OG. That's like a $1 per year! Hahahaha!

I remember getting stopped by OG security because the &*^% cashier forgot to remove the security device. Why they put a security device on a cheapo wallet just defies logic.

To sum up, during the first weekend of May in '04 and '05, I was enjoying creature comforts in Sentosa hotels. In '06 and '07, however, I was slaving in the office. Life took a serious downturn, man.

I just don't know what to do with myself by Dusty Springfield
Lyrics by Burt Bacharach / Hal David

I just don't know what to do with myself
Don't know just what to do with myself
I'm so used to doing everything with you
Planning everything for two
And now that we're through
I just don't know what to do with my time
When I'm not with you
I just don't know what to do

Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie

YouTube text link

I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, Myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
Its time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry

The path that I'm walking
I must go alone
I must take the baby steps until I'm full grown
Fairytales don't always have a happy ending, do they
And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay

I need to be with myself and center,
Clarity, Peace, Serenity

"I Try" by Macy Gray

I try to say goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not near

I may seem alright and smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front
I play it off but I'm dreamin of you
I'll keep my cool but I'm fiendin

What a surprise! Bucky actually seems on the verge of a successful career.

Bucky. Bucky Covington. The one I didn't have to wait very long before he was voted off American Idol. And now he might become the male Carrie Underwood. WOW! I'm stunned.

Here's a music video of "Different World", an extremely radio-friendly country music track.

Faith Hill - Cry

YouTube text link

If I had just one tear running down your cheek
Maybe I could cope maybe I'd get some sleep

Yeah.... could you cry a little
Lie just a little
Pretend that you're feeling a little more pain
I gave now I'm wanting
Something in return
So cry just a little for me

Yeah.... and you'd cry a little
Die just a little
And baby I would feel just a little less pain
I gave now I'm wanting
Something in return
So cry just a little for me

For giving it to me

Hold On by Wilson Phillips

YouTube text link

I know this pain
Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Don't ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

You could sustain
Or are you comfortable with the pain?
You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself into your own mess
Lettin' your worries pass you by
Don't you think it's worth your time
To change your mind?

I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day
And you break free from the chains

Some day somebody's gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don't you know?
Don't you know things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things'll go your way
Hold on for one more day

Part 5

(Last POTO post, I promise.)

This is cool! MUST SEE!

The crew of the movie sings Phantom of the Opera.

YouTube text link

posted 22:29 0 comments

Part 4

OH! I almost forgot to blog this. When Phantom sang his first duet, I sorta stopped paying attention. Instead I was fantasising about
Gerard Butler (who played Phantom in the movie version) on the set of 300. I imagined him in his leather pants and red cloak singing Phantom songs. And none of his 300 men can make fun of him, because he would just whoop their asses.

Check out these vids of Gerry:

Here he is in studios, recording for Phantom

YouTube text link

An unreleased song from the movie. It's good! Well, maybe a tad pansy/emo.

See if you can tell Gerry from Michael Crawford (the original Phantom).

Part 3

I saw
Phantom of the Opera today! Which explains all the POTO posts. :)

How long has it been since POTO premiered at Kallang Theatre? Ten years?
It was my first musical and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I still have all the memorabilia: score, programme, 2 tshirts, cassette tapes (yes, it was that long ago) and binoculars. The t-shirts sold now have new designs but the binoculars still remain the same. I felt tempted to buy it just for fun but Peiee persuaded me otherwise.

Previously I was rooting for Phantom to get the girl but today I wanted Raoul live happily ever after with Christine. And when I was a teenager, I was swept away by the ROMANCE (in caps). Today I was thinking stalker, S&M, etc. Gee, has the romantic in me been replaced by a cynic? However at the end, I was this close to crying for the Phantom. Maybe there's hope for me afterall.

The visuals were stunning! They dressed up the proscenium arch of the esplanade theatre with golden Gothic motifs. I was particularly impressed by the "sculptures" of the nude maiden fighting off the satyr/demon/ogre.

The set was truly breath-taking, especially the Phantom's lair with the mechanical boat. It was amazing how they transformed the stage to, among many thing, a lake, a cavern, tunnels, rooftops... And those brilliant dozen or so curtains. OMG - I think I may have developed curtain-fetish.

POTO has a several "opera within an opera" moments. And they made a conscious effort to differentiate between "realistic" and "non-realistic" backdrops. So when it was (e.g) the Don Juan musical, one can see the (obviously) painted, fake backdrops and props. Making things even more theatrical than they are. I can't express this properly but I hope you get the gist.

I love the irony of performers pretending to be performers. And how during certain scenes, we the audience gets to pretend to be The Audience. Len would be able to explain the "Breaking the 4th Wall" concept, but I can't, so let's leave this thought half-formed.

OMG. How cute is the guy playing Raoul? Total, utter eye candy. Had a crush on him until I read his bio and learnt he's a cruise ship performer. *Cue flashbacks of Simon on AI* I felt that performance was terrible, very caberet... very cruise ship. I couldn't help but laugh madly and Peiee thought I was weird. :P

So, POTO was a visual spectacular and the music (lyrics and score) are as powerful as ever. Would have been a terrific production except for one thing - the humans. I felt that the singing, acting, dancing and direction were all below par. Is it just a matinee phenomenon? Were they saving their voices (and energy) for the evening's show? Did I unknowingly watch a show of understudies?

And why did everyone else think it was worthy of a standing ovation?

If I wasn't swamped with work and broke, I would like to watch it again. Just to see if it gets better. I know, it's a crazy thought.

posted 21:54 0 comments

Part 2

While looking for a video for the previous post, I came across some gems, which I want to highlight now.

POTO was created with Sarah Brightman in mind and till today she is considered to be the best Christine. Too bad I couldn't find a decent video of her. Perhaps that's because YouTube is relatively new and no-one has uploaded footage from over two decade ago.

What I did find were these videos:

-
Sarah Brightman's concert (Japan 1992) (hear her amazing voice)

-
London musical with Rachel Barrell (LIVE)

-
Canadian cast's Rebecca Caine (audio only)

-
Movie version with Emma Rossum
(maybe a familiar version?)

- a SIMS version!

The clip I finally used
had a mixture of Sarah Brightman, Claire Moore, and Rebecca Caine.

Check out this early
version of the song. It's so different now.

"Think of Me" from
Phantom of the Opera

YouTube text link

Think of me, think of me fondly,
when we've said goodbye.

Remember me every so often-
promise me you'll try.

On that day, that not so distant day,
when you're far away and free
If you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me

Think of all the things
we've shared and seen -
don't think about the way things
might have been . . .

Think of me, think of me waking,
silent and resigned.
Imagine me, trying too hard
to put you from my mind.

Flowers fades,
The fruits of summer fade,
They have their seasons, so do we
but please promise me, that sometimes
you will think of me!

-lyrics with stage directions!

Goodbye by Spice Girls

YouTube text link

There will come a day
When you will be able, able to say
Never mind the pain, all the aggravation
You know there's a better way
For you and me to be

The times when we would play about
The way we used to scream and shout
We never dreamed you'd go your own sweet way

Goodbye my friend
It's not the end
So glad we made it, time will never change it, no no

Bésame Mucho is a Mexican song written in 1940 by Consuelo Velázquez before her sixteenth birthday. (wiki)

WOW! A teenager wrote this? It's so beautiful!

Besame Mucho sung by
Andrea Bocelli

YouTube text link

lyrics:
Besame, besame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche la ultima vez

Besame, besame mucho
Que tengo miedo a perderte, perderte despues

Quiero tenerte muy cerca
Mirarme en tus ojos
Verte junto a mi
Piensa que tal ves manana
Yo ya estar lejos
Muy lejos de aqui

English translation:

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
As if tonight was
the last time.

Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
Because I fear to lose you,
To lose you later on.

I want to have you very close
To see myself reflected in your eyes,
To see you close to me,
Thinking that perhaps by tomorrow
I'll already be far away,
very far from here.

The Itchy & Scratchy Show

I'm coming into my mutant powers. Or so says Superman.

It started, very typically, with the mysterious bite(s). My left pinkie is red, swollen, itchy and painful. I can hardly make out what seems like 2 or 3 bite/sting marks.

Then I noticed I was getting reddish dots all over my limbs. Later on, my leg felt like a relief map of Mordor. And that's when I panicked and ran to the doctor's. He told me it was some viral thing which will take care of itself. Sooner or later. Gee, thanks.

The next morning, the welts had subsided but not disappeared. So now I'm regularly taking my anti-allergy pill and applying calamine lotion. (Which, damnit, I keep calling chamomile lotion. Argh!) (gosh, i had to spell-check these 2 words!)

I think I have
HIVES. It can be due to allergic reaction to insect bites or food. Maybe it was the Satay-flavoured broadbeans from GV Plaza? Though hives can be stressed induced too. Wonder if I can use this to get my boss to lay off me? Hmmm...

YouTube text link

And I am telling you
I'm not going,
Even though the rough times are showing.

We're part of the same place.
We're part of the same time.
We both have the same mind.

I'm not wakin' up tomorrow mornin'
And findin' that there's nobody there.

I'm not gonna leave you,
There's no way I will.

And I am telling you
I'm not going.
You're the best man I'll ever know.
There's no way I can ever go,
No, no, no, no way,
No, no, no, no way I'm livin' without you.
I'm not livin' without you.
I don't want to be free.

I'm stayin',
I'm stayin'.

WHO'S YOUR DADDAY??!!!

Last night on
American Idol, Blake Lewis performed "Time of the Season".

YouTube text link

I've never heard this song before, so I searched for the original by The Zombies.

YouTube text link

The lyrics of this song are really risque, which explains the raunchy MTV.

It's the time of the season.
When love runs high.
And this time, give it to me easy.
And let me try with pleasured hands.
To take you in the sun to (promised lands).

According to
Wiki, this song was the origin of the phrase "Who's your daddy?"

Ah!

video and online.

RidingCrying in Cars with Boys

One upon a long time ago, I attended a GeogSoc Management Committee meeting. I felt marginalised in the new power structure and was extremely upset. I told the Boyfriend "let's go someplace quiet" and we ended up parked at Clementi Woods. He patiently waited for me to cry my eyes out before offering comfort and practical advice.

In the very recent past, I attended a divisional restructuring brainstorming meeting. I felt that the shakeup not only left me worse off but I was probably the most screwed-over person there. Not.A.Happy.Camper.

I told the boy friend "let's go someplace quiet" and we ended up parked at West Coast Park. He patiently waited for me to cry my eyes out before offering comfort and practical advice.

I'm not looking forward to repeating this pattern. I hope I never end up at Pasir Panjang Ridge, once again crying because of others' machinations.

~

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to laugh, a time to weep

"Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)"

Its the morning after Shaun + Hwee Peng's wedding and I'm taking advantage of the free PCs at the Club Room. Ah, the perks that come with being a part (even a minor one) of the wedding party. :)

I feel kinda disloyal to the Oois, but the Wong Wedding was The. Best. Wedding. Ever.

EVER.

[Nice music is playing in the background. A sign that I should be here, blogging.]

Before the wedding, Shaun talked about carefully choosing the score to the wedding, even boasting that it would provide people with an Education. I think he did a great job!

Here's a list of songs from the wedding that I could catch. Sometimes the music was too low or I was too busy chatting with my tablemates.

The Wedding Song Selection

There Are Places I Remember (Photo montage)
I Finally Found Someone (Processional)
What A Wonderful World
Come What May
I'm Gonna Get You Good
Its Now or Never
Bed of Roses
Iris
Beautiful Dawn (Wedding video)
Shaft (Second processional)
Let's Stay Together
Over The Rainbow
I Wanna Wake Up With You (Photo montage)
Still The One
You'll Never Walk Alone
Up Where We Belong
Hold On Me
