it sucks to be me... tra la la

i think award shows are boring. well, except for the MTV VMAs and the Movie Awards. though even those are becoming rather repetitive. then, i saw the 2004 Tony Awards on cable. And... WOW! OMG! Now that's what an award show should be.

Perhaps this is the art form best suited for awards. For instance, at the Oscars, the only performances (which break up the tedium of giving out awards) are the "Best Song" nominees. Most of the time, these songs are heavily context-dependant and are better heard while viewing the movie. Annie Lennox' "Into the West" was really moving, while watching LOTR. But onstage, the song was just weak. As for the MTV VMAs, if you don't like the genre, you won't enjoy the performances either.

But its different with musicals. They are MEANT to be performed onstage. And each production number has a beginning, climax and end. Its like a really short movie. And who can resist musicals? Its so easy to like. And hum. And those tunes can get REALLY stuck in your head.

Another thing that makes the Tonys enjoyable are the acceptance speeches. These people know how to work a stage! No speech is too long or too tiresome for the audience. And these veteran actors have great stage presence. So even when they aren't saying anything, they speak volumes.

This year "Avenue Q" won the "Best New Musical" category, and deservedly so. Its like "Rent" with Muppets. So. Darn. Funny. One of the songs is "It Sucks to be Me", which is super hilarious. If I can get a hold of the soundtrack, I'd share it with everyone. It's a great song!

And on the CD are other songs like "What would you do with a BA in English?", "I'm not wearing underwear today", "The Internet is for Porn".... So. F*ing. Hilarious.
